Spotlight: Local Politics Around the Country
Tracking Local Politics
While state and federal policies often dominate the headlines, local politics directly and immediately impact our daily lives, and they deserve just as much attention. That’s why we’re making local policy a key focus moving forward.
As part of this effort, we’re developing easy-to-understand policy trackers, starting with Loudoun County, VA, and Cook County, IL. These locations were chosen because of our strong local connections and networks that can both support and benefit from this initiative. We aim to make local governance more accessible, transparent, and actionable for everyone.
Here are some of the most notable developments in local governance and civic matters across the U.S.:
Loudoun County, VA
The Loudoun County Board of Supervisors approved a new collective bargaining agreement with SEIU Virginia 512, effective July 1, 2025. The agreement will have a total fiscal impact of $42.8 million over three years and will change the working conditions for county government employees in the General Government Bargaining Unit. Cook County, IL
Cook County has created a five-year economic plan for 2025-2029. The plan focuses on promoting racial equity and building resilience. It aims to remove long-standing barriers to economic opportunity for communities that have been left out and to improve the county's ability to handle economic and climate challenges. Source
Miami-Dade County, FL
Miami-Dade County commissioners voted 8-2 to stop adding fluoride to the local water supply, a practice used since 1958. This decision may affect dental health for residents. However, County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava has a 10-day period during which she can veto the decision. Source
Los Angeles County, CA
The Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation released its 2025 Economic Forecast Report. The report shows that the economy is expected to slow down due to recent wildfire disasters, with real GDP growth projected to be 2.1% in 2025 and 1.3% in 2026, and unemployment expected to reach 6.1%. These changes could affect job opportunities and economic stability for residents. Source
Harris County, TX
Harris County has approved a $2.67 billion budget for 2025, with over half of the funds designated for law enforcement and the justice system. The budget also provides funding for public safety, adds $20 million to disaster response funds, and supports infrastructure improvements. In November, voters will have a chance to decide on increased funding to replace flood control infrastructure. Source
